Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a progressive pain in the hand and arm caused by a pinched nerve wrist. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist.

The median nerve is responsible for controlling the palmar sensation of the thumb and fingers (although not the little finger), and the impulses of some small muscles in the palm of the hand thatallow the fingers and thumb move .

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway – about as big as your thumb – located on the side of the palm of your hand between the bones and carpal tunnel ligaments.

The carpal tunnel protects the main nerve of your hand

The carpal tunnel protects the main nerve of your hand and nine tendons that flex the fingers.

Nerve compression due to thickening from irritated tendons or other swelling narrows the carpal tunnel and causes the median nerve  compressed causing numbness, pain and, eventually, hand weakness that characterize carpal tunnel syndrome.

The result may be pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist, expanding arm. Although painful sensations may indicate other conditions or diseases, but Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common.

Fortunately, for most people with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome the proper treatment can relieve pain and stiffness restoring the normal use of their wrists and hands.
